Conference Summary
36th Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience
Atlanta, Georgia
October 14-18, 2006

Kevin Spitler

Ph.D. Candidate
Neuroscience GIDP

Society for Neuroscience is the largest neuroscience meeting, attended by more than 25,000 researchers, academics, and physicians. This was the perfect setting for me to discuss my work with leaders in the field, learn about current research, and meet with potential future mentors.

The interdisciplinary nature of my research drew me to the Society of Neuroscience (SfN) meeting. I was able to present my research to leaders of various research fields that intersect with my project. Only a large meeting like the SfN meeting could provide this possibility. I received positive feedback and I am encouraged that my project will have an impact.

I benefited tremendously by interacting with other researchers at their posters. Not only did I learn about their work but I also was able to ask questions. Additionally, I learned several analyses that are applicable to my work. SfN is an excellent meeting for such scientific dialogue.

I met with several professors and postdoctoral fellows to plan my future research following the completion of my degree. It was exciting to hear about the projects that are beginning in these labs and to prepare for the next stage of my career.

I am grateful for the support that has enabled me to attend the Society for Neuroscience meeting. The conference has been a boon to my dissertation work that will extend far into my academic career. I look forward to the short term and long term prospects initiated by this event.
