Graduate Interdisciplinary Programs (GIDPs) report to the Vice President for Research, Graduate Studies and Economic Development through the Director of GIDPs.

Article 1. Executive Committee and Chairperson of the Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Insect Science.

The GIDP in Insect Science is administered by a program Chair and an Executive Committee, consisting of five to seven members appointed (one per year) by the Director of Graduate Interdisciplinary Programs.  The Chair is appointed for a renewable five-year term and Executive Committee members are appointed to renewable five-year terms.  The members of the Executive Committee should represent the major areas of insect science.  The Executive Committee will receive nominations for new members from the participating faculty and produce a ballot to be voted on by the membership.  When a chairperson's term expires, the Executive Committee will nominate one of themselves for this position.  The chairperson will convene and chair meetings of the Executive Committee of the IDP and act on behalf of the Executive Committee to implement the program.

The responsibilities of the executive committee are to:

  1. Devise and implement procedures to be followed in screening, selecting and reviewing members of the Insect Science GIDP;
  2. Devise and implement appropriate policies and procedures for the operation of the graduate program, such as admissions, curriculum, student supervision and completion of degree program requirements and decisions regarding program resources;
  3. Serve as the admissions committee to solicit, review and act upon applications from prospective students;
  4. Appoint interim faculty advisors for new students to provide academic counsel to, and evaluation of, students in the early phases of their program until each has a Major Professor and an individual Graduate Committee;
  5. Prepare and submit annual reviews of the Insect Science program activities and accomplishments for the Director of Graduate Interdisciplinary Programs;
  6. Ensure that regular program reviews, consistent with the Board of Regents requirements, are carried out;
  7. Facilitate interaction and communication within the Program in Insect Science and with supporting academic units heads and deans;
  8. Seek sources of funding and budgetary support in coordination with the Center for Insect Science;
  9. Solicit nominations to the yearly vacated slot on the Executive Committee to ensure continuity over time;
  10. Establish standing and ad hoc committees as are needed for effective operation.

Article 2. Membership in the Committee.

Membership in the Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Insect Science is open to faculty at the University of Arizona who are willing to make a commitment to Insect Science as an interdisciplinary field of graduate study.  This commitment should be expressed through participation in Program development and maintenance, teaching courses offered through the Insect Science GIDP, service as host faculty for first year laboratory rotations, and service as Major Professor for students enrolled in the program.

Criteria for membership are activity and excellence in research in insect science, as shown by research support, publication record and service as student advisors.  Members of the Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Insect Science will be reviewed periodically by the Executive Committee to ensure that they continue to meet these standards.  Membership can be proposed by candidate members or through nomination by a current member of the Committee.  The process of candidacy is initiated by submission of curriculum vitae to and a meeting with the Executive Committee.  Recommendations for membership are submitted to the Director of Graduate Interdisciplinary Programs for appointment.  The members of the Insect Science GIDP will meet at least once a year and as needed.  Fifty‑one percent of the members will constitute a quorum.  Majority vote of those present at a meeting or 51% return of ballots will rule.

Article 3. Amendments.

The bylaws shall be amended or revised by movement of the Executive Committee and a two-thirds positive vote by the Insect Science GIDP.
